Not his wealth or power or advantage or place in line, they worship his innate ability to be untouched and unchanged by human concern. He is everything they wish to be, whether consciously or unconsciously, unmitigated and unrestrained power. A modern version of Caligula, sadistic, perverted and possessed of unbridled ambition, the type every small minded and weak willed man has been attracted to since time immemorial.
